Inside the basement of the Good News Bible Church in Iowa City, the service is a free English language class hosted by the Friendship Community Project.

The 501(c)(3) aims to help immigrants and refugees in the area.

Susan Prepejchal is one of the many volunteers who helps teach the classes.

"It just makes me happy that they're getting it," she said. "I know how challenging it is to learn another language and how great it feels when you finally get it."

Prepejchal teaches them everyday basic skills, such as counting money, talking about clothing and asking for help. The adults come from all over the world.

Xiaohui Luo is from China and attended the class as a visitor to Iowa City.

"It's very helpful for me," she said.

"I don't know all of their languages, so if I know their language, I think about the sentences in a different way and having to make a switch," Prepejchal said. "But if I don't know their language, sometimes they tell me."

Since the program is all-volunteer based and donation based, the group is always seeking donations.
