Dan Gable will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday, December 7. That's according to a release from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum.
President Trump will present Gable with the award during a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the White House.
The president made the announcement that Gable will receive the award in October, during a campaign visit in Des Moines. He took the stage with the president on October 14 and spoke briefly to a people attending the rally.
Gable, a Waterloo native, is a wrestling icon, who won two NCAA championships wrestling for Iowa State, won a Gold Medal in the 1972 Olympic Games and coached the Iowa Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA team championships
On Monday, Gable will be with his wife Kathy, his four daughters, and their 13 grandchildren.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to people who "have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."
"It's an honor," Gable said. "To get an award like this, it's a lifetime achievement award, not only for what you did, but for what you continue to do," said Gable.
