A woman who allegedly hit and killed a bicyclist in Central City last month is now charged with first-degree murder.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office charged 59-year-old Melinda Lawrence with first-degree murder, homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Deputies and ambulances responded to a report of a pedestrian versus car crash at 11:03 p.m. on Aug. 30 and found an unresponsive male at the intersection of Marion Road and Barber Street. The man, identified as 54-year-old Jeffrey Alan Scott, of Central City, died at the scene.

Authorities saw Lawrence purposely drove at Scott and hit him while he was riding his bike. Authorities say Lawrence then left the scene knowing Scott was injured, but was stopped a short distance away by police. While being questioned, Lawrence passed out and was taken to a hospital for treatment. While at the hospital, a blood sample determined that Lawrence's blood alcohol level was 0.168, more than double the legal limit to drive.
