Weekend shooting marks Cedar Rapids homicide record

The Cedar Rapids Police Department confirmed a weekend shooting at the Summer View Village broke the city's homicide record.

Department officials said nine homicides in one year is the most since stats started being recorded in 1959. And there are still more than five months left in 2020.

There were eight reported homicides in 2014.

Keyshawn Allers, 19 of Palo, died Sunday from the Sunday shooting. Officers found him in the 100 block of Curtis Street SW with multiple gunshot wounds around 4 a.m.

Allers was pronounced dead at the scene. Allers was a former Kennedy High School student and played football there.

Kennedy Football's Twitter account said Monday "Tragic news. A young life cut way too short. Our condolences out to Keyshawn's family."



CRPD are investigating it as a homicide. They are asking anyone with information to contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5491 or Linn County CrimeStoppers at 1-800-CS-CRIMES (274637).

The following shows the other eight people killed in Cedar Rapids so far in 2020:

January 24: Andrew Gaston

Andrew Gaston, an 18-year-old Metro High Student, was killed on January 24th. Gaston was the first homicide of 2020 when he was shot near Agin Court NE. Two teens, both underage, were arrested and are facing charges.

January 28:Jose Eduardo Millan-Ramirez

Jose Eduardo Millan-Ramirez, 22, died at the hospital after being shot and killed near 634 Ashton Place NE. No arrests have been made in this case.

March 4:Tremaine Williams

Tremaine Williams, 35, was stabbed to death at a home in the 700 block of 8th Ave. SW. Jacqueline Holmes, 36, is arrested and charged with murder.

March 12: Jordan Haynes

Police found the body of Jordan Haynes on March 12 in a vehicle in a wooded area just off 76th Avenue SW. Haynes death was later ruled a homicide. No arrests have been in the case.

April 22: Judeah Dawson

16-year-old Judeah Dawson was shot and killed in the 200 block of 15th Street NW in mid-April. No arrests have been made in the case but there is reward being offered for more information.

May 1: Asia Grice

Asia Grice was killed in an apartment complex shooting in the NW side of Cedar Rapids. She was one of two females shot on May 1st. The other survived. Police say Grice was pregnant at the time she was killed.Johnnie Osborne IV, 26, was arrested and charged with murder.

May 22: Daniel Spangler

Daniel Spangler, 69, was found shot in late May at a home at 508 B Avenue. Investigators ruled the death a homicide but so far no arrests have been made.

June 18: Malik Sheets

Cedar Rapids Washington grad Malik Sheets was shot and killed in the 1000 block of Regent Street NE last month. He just finished his sophomore year at the University of Iowa. No arrests have been made.
