Police have made an arrest for the murder of a Washington man found dead in his apartment complex Wednesday.

Clarence Dean Pedersen, 64 of Washington, was taken into custody at 10:00 Wednesday night and charged with murder.

Earlier that day, police found the body of Ed Jones, 70 in the apartment complex the two lived in at 601 West Adams Street.

Jones was found with a stab wound to his upper torso.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says investigators found a large knife on the victim's lap with apparent blood on the blade.

Pedersen admitted to owning a similar knife. Authorities also found a handwritten note in his belongings reading "Kill Ed".

The suspect is in the Washington County Jail and is scheduled to make his first appearance in court Thursday.

If convicted, he faces life in prison without the chance of parole.
