Union Community School District has canceled classes in all their schools for Friday, January 18, 2019 due to norovirus.

The district posted the announcement on Facebook and their website saying a staff member had been diagnosed with the illness. Officials say taking Friday off allows state health officials to clean the schools in order to prevent anyone else from contracting the virus.

"Norovirus is a very contagious virus that can infect anyone. You can get it from in infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces," the post reads.

The Iowa Department of Health has been contacted and they are conducting a thorough and intensive cleaning of all surfaces inside every school building.

The district asks if any parents have questions you can call their district office at 319-342-2674.
