Public Health Directors from ten Iowa counties wrote a letter to Governor Kim Reynolds strongly encouraging her to issue a cloth mask mandate to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The letter cites a statement made by CDC Director Robert R. Redfield. The statement explains that, "We are not defenseless against COVID-19. Cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus-particularly within a community setting."

Local Health Directors from the following counties contributed to signing the letter:

  • Linn County
  • Siouxland District Health
  • Scott County
  • Black Hawk County
  • Buchanan County
  • Johnson County
  • Washington County
  • Dubuque County
  • Jones County
  • Delaware County

The letter stresses the growing evidence that masks provide a level of control over transmission of the virus. Writers of the letter explain that this would be a public health win as well as an economic win.
