The lights are out for some in eastern Iowa this morning following a powerful winter storm.

Additional power outages are possible following ice accumulation Wednesday and strong winds Thursday.

With 0.25 to 0.40" of ice accumulation in areas north of Highway 30, there's likely build up on trees and powerlines. Strong winds will put stress on powerlines and trees and could lead to sporadic power outages.

In the event that you do lose power, there are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • If you have a generator, make sure you keep it outside and away from windows so you don't run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Never use gas-powered ovens or stoves to heat your home
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed so food does not spoil.
