NWS: Marshalltown tornado rated as an EF-3

The National Weather Service has rated a tornado that destroyed several buildings and injured at least 10 people.

The EF-3 tornado had estimated peak winds of 144 miles per hour.

A state of emergency was declared for the city. The top of the Marshall County Courthouse clocktower was blown off the building, and the local hospital sustained structural damaged, prompting an evacuation.

Earlier Friday, the National Weather Service says at least five tornadoes touched down in Iowa on Thursday, including an EF-3 in Pella and an EF-2 in Bondurant.
