CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KGAN) - Neighbors of Scott Greene are trying to understand how he became the prime suspect in the shooting and killing of two Des Moines metro area police officers.

Greene lived in a quiet neighborhood in Urbandale, a suburb of Des Moines.

“Right away it's just like, why ... why kill an officer ... why kill two officers, why do these things?" said Tim Tinkle, one of Greene’s neighbors.

One neighbor with whom CBS2/FOX28 spoke says Greene had struggled with employment and family matters.

Greene’s mother was arrested last month for assaulting him. Greene was in court as recently as Tuesday, but police declined to provide further details.

“It has worried us, but when we have looked out and seen cop cars or something, we unfortunately have been saying, 'Oh, there's kind of something going on with Scott again next door,'" said Bart Brandon, one of Greene’s neighbors.

So far, Greene has not been charged, but is in a local hospital under police custody.
