CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) — A 25-year-old man from Cedar Rapids is facing multiple charges after leading police on a chase that exceeded 90 miles per hour.
Police clocked a Chevy Malibu driven by William Atkinson going 112 mph on I-380 around 1:58 a.m. on Monday. The officer then attempted to stop Atkinson, who got off of the interstate on the 29th Street off ramp at a high right of speed. He then went through a red light at the 29th Street off-ramp traveling northbound onto Madison Street NE. Atkinson then proceeded northbound on Madison Street and went through a red light at Glass Road. The chase continued northbound onto the on-ramp to 380 off of Glass Road and reached a speed of 80 mph and then exited I-380 at 42nd Street.
Police say as Atkinson approached 42nd Street, he went through a solid red light and turned westbound onto 42nd Street. Atkinson reached speeds of 94 mph on 42nd Street between Wenig Road and Blue Jay Drive NE. He continued westbound on 42nd Street and went through a red light at 42nd Street and Edgewood Road NE. As Atkinson went past Majestic Court NE, he turned southward going off the road into the Izaak Walton Shooting League at 5401 42nd Street NE.
At that point, police found the vehicle parked at the end of a driveway near the wooded area to the south. A passenger was removed from the vehicle, but Atkinson had fled on foot.
Nearly a half hour after the pursuit started, police received a report that a car matching the description of the vehicle in the chase had been stolen in the 5600 block of River Parkway NE. When police made contact with the person who reported his vehicle was stolen, they found that it was Atkinson and took him into custody. Police saw he was uncooperative and attempted to give a false name.
Atkinson is charged with Operating While Under the Influence – 2nd Offense, Attempt to Elude While Participating in a Felony, Reckless Driving, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device (3 counts), Speeding (2 counts) (112 in 60 mph zone I-380 and J Avenue NE) (94 in 35 mph zone Blue Jay Drive and 42nd Street NE), Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts, and Providing False Identification Information.
