MARION, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) — City leaders in Marion are pushing forward with an expansion plan decades in the making. A rezoning effort along a new stretch of Tower Terrace Road to allow new commercial development in the heart of new residential. Planners want nearby residents to know they will not be flooded with a new retail corridor like what already exists on 7th Avenue and Collins Road. "It'll be your restaurants your eye doctor, maybe a Hy-Vee Drug or a small box type drug store and then as you go back west you'll be residential." Said Dave Hockett, Principal Planner for the city of Marion. "It's been on the books for some time, it going to be the services people desire."
Hockett says heavier commercial development is likely to come closer to Highway 13. An intersection there is on the drawing board, but construction will be scheduled as more development comes to the area. Another road block for completion of Tower Terrace Road is the necessary bridge needed to cross Indian Creek. Further west in Hiawatha, construction on a new interchange with I-380 is scheduled to begin in 2022.
