Iowa sports betting reaches $1.7 billion in two years

Sunday marked two years since the first legal sports bet in Iowa was made on Aug. 15, 2019.

Since then Sports betting has grown in Iowa as now 12 online sportsbooks and 18 retail sportsbooks and has grown into the ninth-largest largest legal sports betting market in the U.S.

From Aug. 15, 2019, through July 31, 2021, sportsbooks have generated:

  • $1.7 billion in wagering
  • $122.8 million in net receipts
  • $8.3 million in state taxes

Before 2021, sports bettors had to visit a casino to register for an online sportsbook in Iowa.
