Iowa man falls 20 feet from tree stand

Iowa man falls out of tree stand while deer hunting.

A central Iowa man fell out of a tree stand over the weekend while deer hunting.

Bobbie Joe Stephens, 24 of Indianola, had to be taken to the hospital after the fall, according to the Iowa DNR.

He was treated for a broken ankle

The DNR says Stephens fell 23-feet into a ravine on private land. He had not been able to hook up to his harness before the fall.

The agency says the tree strand straps were broken due to weather exposure over time and had been left up since last season.

The DNR says this serves as an important reminder that if hunters leave tree stands out year-round, be sure to check the straps before using it again.
