Memorial Day weekend is getting underway, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources wants to remind boaters of safety tips and reminders to think about before heading out on the water this weekend.
"We’ll definitely be out on the water, its going to be a beautiful weekend this weekend," said Ron Lane, a conservation officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
"Boats usually have the capacity limits on them, so if your capacity is 6, you can only have 6 people on there. If you're towing someone, that includes the person that you’re towing," said Lane.
Lane added that typically the DNR often finds boaters with distance and speed violations this time of year, and adds to make sure boaters have an up to date registration.
"We want to make sure people abide by those rules."
He adds that boaters should have a designated driver while drinking alcohol, and to be aware of conditions on the water and with the sun that can lead to impairment.
"A lot of times its people not paying attention," said Lane. It's not like there's lines to stay on like a road. Just make sure you're watching other boats."
