Donation helps CRPD buy ballistic vest for K9

They say every dog has its day, and for a crime fighting corridor pup, that turned out to be Friday.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department was finally able to get a ballistic vest for every one of the K9 units.

Oden was the last dog on the force to be equipped with the proper protection.

His partner in fighting crime, Officer Chris Carton told CBS2/FOX28 Oden is more than just a dog, he's family.

"He's with me 24/7, 365," said Officer Carton. "His role is to help me go home at the end of the night. You know we never want it to come to that, but that's kinda the reality of it and that vest definitely helps."

The vest was purchased through a $2,500 donation from the Mayflower Chapter of the Daughters of the American revolution.

Officer Carton held a demonstration for the chapter to show off what he can do.
