City of Washington passes tax on motels and hotels

The tax takes effect January 2018

Starting next year, anybody who stays in a hotel, motel or inn in the city of Washington must pay a 7% sales tax. People voted to pass the motel-hotel referendum on August 1, 2017.

The Chamber of Commerce executive director Michelle Redlinger says funds from the sales tax will go to promoting tourism in the city.

"We see a lot of people come to the community. A lot of visitors and so this tax will really just put us in line with other communities," says Redlinger.

This is the third time the measure has been voted on. It passed with a 75% vote.

Next, the city will assemble a committee to help allocate funds. The sales tax will take effect January 2018.
