35-year-old Alicia Cole pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury. (Linn County Jail)

A Cedar Rapids woman who drove her car with her two children inside into near freezing water in the Cedar River has been sentenced to three years probation.

35-year-old Alicia Cole was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to two counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury. Cole also received five years in suspended prison time, which she could still serve if she violates her probation.

Cole admitted to intentionally driving her vehicle into the river near the Mohawk boat ramp on March 11. Boaters on the river were able to rescue Cole and her two children from the sinking car and helped them onto their ski boats. One of the children suffered a head contusion while the other suffered abdominal pain.

Cole's vehicle was recovered two weeks later by dive crews.
