The Cedar Rapids Police Department is warning people that there is someone impersonating them with a spoofed phone number.
CRPD says the received a report of someone saying they received a call from a different person stating they were from the police department and they needed to know where he was at so that he could be arrested. The person hung up the phone, knowing that CRPD does not call ahead of arresting anyone, especially for alleged IRS debt like the spoofer was calling for.
The caller ID had a number that was an actual CRPD phone number.
Police say this is just one way scammers will try to steal your money and personal information.
Police say the best thing you can do with these calls is to hang up and not engage. If you believe you've received one of these calls, you can file a complaint on the FTC's website.
