Cedar Rapids mother's killer sentenced to life in prison
A Cedar Rapids man, who killed a mother of three in her garage in April, will spend the rest of his life in prison without the chance for parole.
According to The Gazette, 38-year-old Timothy Evans, formally pleaded guilty to first degree murder in court on Friday in the death of Gina Frederiksen. A first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Court documents showed on April 29, firefighters were called to a garage fire after a neighbor reported hearing an explosion around 7:34 a.m. First responders found Frederiksen unconscious inside with "traumatic injuries" to her head and body. She died a short time later and her cause of death was ruled a homicide.
Prosecutors said Evans told two witnesses that he had just killed a woman and set a detached garage on fire to cover the evidence. They said he described how he killed and that he tried to set the garage on fire to destroy evidence and prevent her from reporting the incident.
Evans was also caught on home surveillance video trying to break into another house nearby. He had been released from jail on his own recognizance just two days before the murder took place.
