In 2022, there have been 13 shots fired incidents, three of those still under investigation.
This past May, the Cedar Rapids police department implemented the Group Violence Intervention Program. Police Chief Wayne Jerman said the GVI plays a huge part in connecting with the community.
"We are seeing huge success. and I think I want to keep it going. That momentum will continue to make a difference here," said Chief Jerman.
In 2022, there have been 13 shots fired incidents, three of those still under investigation.
Chief Jerman said working with the GVI while investigating cases can sometimes bring witnesses forward.
"Some of the community members who are engaged and involved with the GVI do have networks and associates who we reach out to, and want to work together," said Chief Jerman.
Chief Jerman calls the crime activity "uncomfortable and unacceptable" but says Cedar Rapids is still a very safe place to live. In a survey done by the National Network for Safe Communities, Cedar Rapids' average was 10% lower than the national average.
"I know the residents of this community find it alarming whenever there's more incident of shots fired or one shooting. That is my goal to continue to reduce those incidents that happen here," said Jerman.
