Cedar Rapids author on "Pants Optional"
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA —
When Cedar Rapids author Carol Steingraber began writing her book "Pants Optional" she says her inspiration was fear.
"I was afraid I would forget these stories of my parents and my husband and I and I wanted to be able to share them with my children and so I decided I needed to be able to write them down," said Steingreaber.
The book is a humorous autobiography but Steingreaber had a feeling her stories would interest a wider crowd of women.
"I didn't quite know if people who didn't know me would think it was funny," said Steingreaber. "It's just resonating with women and moms and people who take care of their elderly parents."
When "Pants Optional" was picked up by a London publisher, the simple stories about kids, dating and caring for family touched an unexpected group.
"Men are reading the book, men are finding the book inspirational because a lot of men take care of children so they are having a very positive response," she said.
The book recently went on sale in the U.S. and the books success caught her by surprise.
"Seeing it on Amazon it's been riding like #1 and #2 on the hot new releases in the Midwest and in the top 10 in the U.S. that has been completely overwhelming," Said Steingreaber.
One of the biggest challenges was finding a company willing to publish an autobiography about an everyday person however the book is less about Carol and more about a message.
"Life is a blessing, life is short and going through life with a sense of humor makes it a lot more fun," Said Steingreaber.
So when life catches you with your pants down don't forget to stop and laugh.
