Mount Vernon — Residents got a chance to see the new swimming pool and shower facility at Camp Tanager on Thursday afternoon, where camp officials held a ribbon cutting for the Jared and Carol Hills Pool and Busse Shower Facility.
This comes just in time for the grand opening of the pool and shower facility for the upcoming camping season.
The new pool and Busse Shower Facility are part of Camp Tanager's second phase expansion project that's creating a new, larger scale camp.
Along with the new facilities, they are adding a new cabin, some locker rooms, and a ropes course.
Iowa's News Now spoke with Camp Tanager's CEO, Okpara Rice, to talk about the camp's expansion project.
He said the expansion project will help expand the camp site's current facilities and allow more kids to come to Camp Tanager during their camping season.
"One of the things about being at Tanager is that we have incredible public support, incredible philanthropy who step forward and invest in our mission," said Rice. "It feels great to have people come out and actually enjoy the culmination of what has been a lot of hard work to make this happen and also to enjoy knowing that the kids in a few weeks are going to be having a blast splashing in these pools."
The pool and shower facility will be open for campers starting on Monday, June 11th., that's also the first day the camp will open for the season.
On Thursday, Rice said they hope to have the cabin and ropes course open at Tanager by June of next year, however, there are some construction obstacles they must hurdle first.
Resident can make donations to the camp and their expansion project.
