BASE: Saints Shut Out at State

Cedar Rapids Xavier fell to Sioux City East, 1-0 Wednesday at the State Baseball Tournament.

Our own Zach Hanley was there, and has all the action from Des Moines.

Here is the game story from the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

DES MOINES (IAHSAA):  Dom Thompson-Williams drove in the lone run of the game and the Sioux City East Black Raiders scraped out a 1-0 victory over the 10th-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints in a Class 4A quarterfinal game on Wednesday night at Principal Park.

The 2012 Class 4A Player of the Year and the leading hitter in the tournament came through with a big hit for Sioux City East in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners, Thompson-Williams lined a one-out RBI single to center to drive in JJ Stephens for the 1-0 lead. Stephens was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second after Jake McDonald laid down a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Franko singled up the middle to put runners on first and third and the leadoff man took care of the rest.

Davis Camarigg pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win for East. Trey Lapke struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the shutout and get the save. Camarigg (10-0) allowed six hits and fanned five to remain perfect on the year.

The Saints drew two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases in the seventh inning before Lapke got out of the inning, punching the Black Raiders ticket into the semifinals.

Xavier starter Mitch Keller (5-5) allowed one run on five hits and struck out six in six innings.

The Saints left 11 runners on base in the game. Sixth-seeded Xavier ends the season at 25-16.

Third-seeded Sioux City East will play either top-ranked Ankeny or Clinton in Friday nights second semifinal game. First pitch is set for 8 p.m.
