Court Upholds Shooting Conviction
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa's appeals court has upheld the murder conviction of a Waterloo man linked to a 2011 gang-related shooting.
The Iowa Court of Appeals ruled in a decision issued Wednesday that gang evidence and a police interview were properly used in the trial of Montez Caples.
Court Appeals Judge Christopher McDonald wrote in the opinion that even if the evidence had been improper, it wouldn't have changed Caples' conviction. The trial included witness testimony and DNA evidence.
Caples told authorities he was coerced into shooting 34-year-old Robert Shannon. Caples, now 24, is serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in 2013.
