CRCSD Considers Johnson For Magnet School

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- Johnson Elementary School is on track to become a magnet school next year, making it the first magnet school in the Cedar Rapids Community School District.

Associate Superintendent Trace Pickering at Monday's school board meeting will present his recommendation to transition Johnson to a magnet school in the fall of 2015.

With an interest in both an arts focused school and a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) focused school, the recommendation will be to make Johnson a STEAM magnet.

The district has already started the process of designing the STEAM magnet with Doreen Marvin, who is the current president of Magnet Schools of America, and an experienced magnet school designer.

The school board will not vote on the issue on Monday, and has not yet set a date to officially vote on transitioning Johnson into a magnet school.
