Student Seeks Injunction in Power Dispute

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (AP) - A Marshalltown high school student is seeking a court injunction to block a three-game football suspension he received after making a "W" hand signal that school administrators say illustrated support for white power.

17-year-old Blair Van Staalduine sought the injunction Monday in district court.

He acknowledged making the "W" sign last spring during a school spirit day but says it was because he was wearing white.

The photo surfaced months later, and high school activities director Craig Huegel testified Van Staalduine and two other students shown in the photo acknowledged the gesture indicated white power.

Van Staalduine denied making the statement to Huegel.

District Court Judge Steven Oeth is expected to rule on the injunction request later this week.
