New York Sees Bad Flooding

NORTH BABYLON, NY (AP) -- Authorities say a person has died when an SUV was hit by a tractor-trailer during the height of a severe New York rainstorm.

Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke said the collision occurred at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday on the Long Island Expressway near Dix Hills. He says it appears the SUV was driving slowly when it was hit by the larger vehicle.

The person who died was in the SUV. Burke says the body was burned beyond recognition.

The storm slammed the suburban New York area with up to 13 inches of rain from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Dozens of people were rescued from vehicles along flooded roads.
