Iowa City Sidewalk Sales

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28)- The 46th Annual Iowa City Sidewalk Sales kicked off On Wednesday and ended Saturday.

Sandra Navalesi is the owner of Dulcinea and said since she opened the store 18 years ago, the event has brought her store outside.

"It's sun a fun tradition," she said. "It is for me because clothing is a difficult gift to buy for Christmas."

She said the 3-day event boosts business and draws customers inside to check out the full-price items.

"Everybody loves a deal. To me it's like a holiday and I love that everybody participates."

Sidewalk sales not only bring out the crowds, but save local stores from going out of business.

"It supports our community and brings revenue back to the community which is really important," Navalesi said.

Just down the street, the gallery uses cash from these sales to buy new art peices for their display.

"It's a nice way to keep our business going and bring in things we haven't been able to get until this time of the year," Manager Johnie Mcmahon said.

Mcmahon said she has been selling artwork on the sidewalk for 6 years. She said it's fun to see customers walk into the gallery to find pieces they may want to come back for later.

"I've seen a lot of customers hwo have come down and see businesses they usually wouldn't stop into."

"It's my favorite time of the year," Navalesi said.

A lot of retailers said they're continuing to keep items on sale through the week.
