Damage Worse Than Expected on Hwy 1

LINN COUNTY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - An Iowa Department of Transportation bridge inspection team has found that damage done to the Highway 1 bridge near Mt. Vernon is worse than originally thought.

Damage was discovered around the footings of the bridge.  The damage done is also referred to as "scouring".

The damage will require more work than the current construction contractor is capable of performing.  The DOT will therefore begin searching for a new contractor on Monday to perform the work.

Once a contractor is selected, they hope to begin work as soon as possible.  In the interim, the bridge will remain closed with a detour in place.
