Wheels to Prosper

MARION, IA (CBS2/FOX28) While some eastern Iowans are battling rising water levels, many others are coming to their aid with sandbags, food and shelter. But during the rest of the year, plenty of people in the corridor battle economic hardship and sometimes, just bad luck. One repair shop is coming to their aid, with Wheels to Prosper.

The nature of a repair shop is to take what you got, in whatever form it comes, and make it better.

Sometimes, its not the cars that need a lift.

"My dad always taught me when I was young, 'what comes around goes around. and he's to this day still a blue-collar worker, said the Owner of Anderson Automotive Jim Anderson. And he said, 'boys, if you ever get to a point in life where you got a little something, don't ever forget the people who helped you get there."

So five years ago, Anderson started to give back, using what he knows best: cars.

"We try to acquire those cars and then what we do is we refurbish them from stem to stern and then we find a deserving person to award them to for just one dollar, said Anderson.

For a little more than a bag of M&Ms, a high school senior in need gets a car for college, or a young family down on their luck finds one less thing to have to spend money on.

"It has leather interior, power steering, power breaks, windows, locks, tilt, cruise, it all works, said Anderson of the 2004 Buick Regal LS that is up for grabs this year.

Its old enough to register cheaply, but still drivable for a long time if its maintained.

The winner will be picked up at the end of the month, and theyll get a lot more than just the car.

"It goes to show them that no matter how hard life kicks them, no matter how hard life seems to be, there's always a positive light, said Anderson. There's always something good that can come of it. Don't give up."

The only fine print on Jims car lot is that the winner has to be nominated by someone else.

"We determined that the person who really truly deserves to buy a car for a dollar would never nominate themselves, said Anderson.

And thats a pretty good deal.

Nominations are accepted online here or through the mail at the address below.
