NEW: Fire Leaves Thousands Without Power

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - Thousands of Linn County residents woke up without power Friday morning after a transformer substation caught fire and knocked out power to the area.
Just after two in the morning crews were called to the corner of Edgewood Rd. and 42nd St. on reports of a fire.
This is on the corner of Twin Pines Golf Course, just across the street from Transamerica.
Right now, the fire is out, and the intersection of Edgewood and 42nd is back open however police say there may be lanes closed periodically through the morning as crews continue to clean up. It was closed this morning so crews could put out the flames.
Police say the fire was caused by a problem within the substation but aren't saying what exactly the problem was. Earlier this morning surrounding areas were completely dark. Traffic lights up and down Edgewood and some on 42 were out for hours as well as thousands of homes.
Officers say they had to wait for the energy company to turn off the power before they could put the flames out.
At one point, Alliant Energy reported at one point nearly 3,000 people were without power.
