1 Dead, 1 Missing After Boating Accident

CLINTON COUNTY, IA (WHBF-TV) - One person is dead and another missing after a boating accident on the Mississippi near Clinton on Saturday.

Officials with the Clinton County Sheriff's Office say the call came in just after 11:30 AM of a boat capsizing on the Mississippi near the Elk River mouth.

All 5 people who were on the boat flew into the water.  3 of those people, including 2 children made it to shore safely with the help of some nearby fishermen.

One woman's body was later recovered; the other man who was on the boat is still missing.

Crews from 5 different area fire departments spent the entire day searching with boats, special sonar equipment, canines and even on foot, but no luck yet.

"I believe it was a matter of the wind and waves played a part in it when the boat turned sideways it started to take on water became swamped on or, or capsized over," said Lt. Tom Paarmann with the Clinton County Sheriffs Department.

Crews will be back out searching the river on Sunday.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
