Earthquake Shakes Arizona, New Mexico

SAFFORD, AZ (AP) - A moderate earthquake has struck in Arizona near the New Mexico line that was widely felt across the region, but no injuries or damages were immediately reported.

The Graham County Sheriff's office says it has received hundreds of calls from residents saying they had felt the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 5.2 temblor struck at 9:59 p.m. PDT Saturday and was centered in southeastern Arizona, about 35 miles east of Safford.

USGS geophysicist Jana Pursley says it touched off several smaller aftershocks.  She says callers from as far away as 150 miles away reported feeling the quake.

Graham County Sheriff's dispatcher Jennifer Taylor says despite the large number of calls, there has been no reports of injury or damage.

She says a few callers said their natural gas meters at their homes were malfunctioning.  The Hidalgo County Sheriff's office in New Mexico said it also received numerous calls but had no reports of serious problems.
