Marion's Growth Continues with Company Move
MARION, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--One of the city's oldest operating businesses is on the move.
Marion Iron Company broke ground at its new site today.
People usually see scraps and metal when they drive through 7th avenue in Marion, but it all changes in a few months thanks to collaboration between the city and Marion iron.
Marion Iron Company is one of the older recycling companies in the country.
They've been around since 1911and started operating at the location on 7th avenue in 1937.
That location is on one of the main roads through the heart of the city.
So city officials approached the owner about moving to a bigger location on Third Avenue, an area that is growing into an Eco Industrial Park.
City leaders say the move will allow them to change the face of city, and Marion Iron leaders say the new and bigger home will make some aspects of business easier
"anybody who's driven by Marion Iron on a regular basis has probably been stopped by us with our trucks pulling in and out and in this location we'll have much more room to operate, said Marion Iron Owner, Jim Brown.
"They can get bigger, move into to new product areas that they haven't been able to get into because they were landlocked and then provide some chances along our central corridor for some other projects to take place, said city manager Lon Pluckhahn.
Construction for that new building begins sometime this week and should be completed in the fall.
