Win With Wellness
BELLE PLAINE, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- When it comes to teenagers, the word apathy is often thrown around. Many people think they don't care enough about the issues affecting them.
However, one high school advocacy group is showing that they care, while making a big impact in their high school - and community.
The 'Win With Wellness' group at Belle Plaine high school is a group of juniors attempting to tackle issues in their community- from nutrition, to exercise, to alcohol free living.
One thing they've been focusing on is underage drinking. We've told you before about the issues many communities in Iowa are having with underage drinking - including Benton County.
With some assistance from the Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC), the group held a community forum on drinking last week - all of it organized and run by the students.
They were only expecting a handful of people, but 170 people showed up to hear what the students had to say.
The group's coordinator, Bob Yilek, says the experience the students are getting will help them change their communities.
"There's a lot of things these kids are going to take from this program into their lives," he says. "Being self-driven and taking on the responsibility and leadership are valuable tools."
