Guttenberg Consider Golf Cart Proposal

GUTTENBERG, Iowa (AP) - People could soon drive golf carts in the northeast Iowa city of Guttenberg under a proposal nearing approval.

Friday the Guttenberg City Council has twice approved a proposed ordinance allowing licensed drivers to operate golf carts on most city streets. A third approval is needed before the proposal becomes law.

Guttenberg Mayor Russ Loven says business owners and tourism representatives requested the new rules. Loven says the change would help visitors get around the Mississippi River town.

The proposal would be limited to people 18 and older who obtain a $50 permit and carry insurance. The carts couldn't travel more than 25 mph.

A final vote could be delayed until questions are resolved about crossing U.S. Highway 52 and how to issue permits.
