World War I Trenches Unearthed at Camp Dodge

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa National Guard Base at Camp Dodge in Johnston has uncovered important historical remnants of World War I trenches built in 1917 to train U.S. soldiers before they were shipped out to Europe.
Excavation began last week and continues as archaeologists uncover training grenades, rifle shells and other artifacts dating back to the period at which the United States entered the war.
Soldiers trained at 16 military bases around the country and some, including Camp Dodge, built extensive trench systems so the soldiers could train in a realistic environment.
Only a few remnants remain. The trenches only recently were discovered at Camp Dodge using aerial maps and radar photography.
Efforts now will turn to preserving the area as the 100th anniversary of its construction approaches.
