Fire Damages Hamburg Inn

IOWA CITY, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) - Fire investigators say the Hamburg Inn in Iowa City will be able to reopen after a fire broke out in the eatery's basement early Sunday morning.

Firefighter arrived to the restaurant just after 1:00 and found smoke coming from the basement once inside.

In the basement, the firefighters say they had a difficult time navigating the layout of the basement. The Hamburg Inn is located in an older building with apartments on top of the restaurant.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames. They say damage was contained mostly to the restaurant's basement, but some of the building's first floor was also damaged.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, an employee of the Hamburg Inn tells CBS 2 that a compressor for one of the diner's pop machines had recently been overheating. They also say they expect the Hamburg Inn to remain closed for about a month.
