Community Marks Girls Abduction

DAYTON, IA - (CBS2/FOX28) - Its a somber day for the small town of Dayton.

Today marks one year since Dezi ughes and Kathlynn Shepard were abducted while walking home from school.

Family and community members gathered to remember Kathlynn.

It was an emotional ceremony for everyone. Students, law enforcement officials, and community members tried to hold back tears.

Kathlynn's parents say they couldn't have gotten through the last year without the community's support.

Michael Klunder was suspected of kidnapping Kathlynn Shepard and Dezi Hughes.

Klunder committed suicide hours after kidnapping the girls.

Just last week, Black Hawk County authorities ruled out Klunder as a potential suspect in the murder of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.
