Citizen's Police Academy: Graduation

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- With class wrapping up with a voluntary Taser demonstration, it was a very shocking ending to our Citizens Police Academy stay.

That was the longest five seconds of my life, student Landon Smith says.

Now, with the chief ready to call our names, it was our opportunity to reflect on 10 weeks of education - 10 weeks of new experiences - From what it takes to wear the badge, to the unpredictability that comes with it.

There were shotguns, stun guns, and everything in between.

You now have a lot of information that the general public doesn't have, Jerman says.

With that knowledge comes a challenge from the chief; In a time where cooperation between the police and public is essential, he wants academy students to reach out.

We would rely on you to be ambassadors for the police department.

Everybody can use that ambassadorship in different ways.

Sue says it's information she can take back to friends family and neighbors.

I learned about what they do, and why they do what they do, and I thought that was really interesting and informative.

As for Landon, it served as a prep course.

Definitely the things I'll need to learn if I want to become a police officer one day, Landon says.

It means he could be shaking the chief's hand once again.

Greg Buelow, who just started as the city's public safety coordinator this year, says it will help with his responsibilities.

Had a lot of respect for the police department going into this job, but then going through the Citizen's Police Academy gives it a whole new perspective.

It's insight and experience we will never forget.

We hope all of you out there have a better understanding of the Cedar Rapids police department. Thanks for joining us on the ride. They're already accepting applications for the next academy in the fall. To take a look, visit
