Laps For Lucas

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) - Sunday not only brought sunshine to Cedar Rapids, but it also brought a great cause.

Laps For Lucas is named after Lucas Montgomery who suffers from a deadly genetic disorder known as Sanfilippo Syndrome, which cause those who suffer from it to lose the ability to talk as well as experience seizures.

Lucas's mother, Stacey Montgomery, says in the past 10 years Laps For Lucas has been held, the growing support for both Lucas and more research into the condition has meant the world to her.

"Once you see Lucas, and once you even know that he's going through pain daily, and he will still manage a smile and know that people are coming out, not just for him, but for these other kids, it's just gratifying," Montgomery said. "There's no, even words for it."

Currently, The FDA is in the middle of approving a gene therapy treatment for the syndrome. Once that is approved, the next step will be a clinical trial.
