Student Brings Angel to Cedar Rapids Through Music
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--She's an angel of hope, an angel of healing, a beacon of peace, and she now has a home in Cedar Rapids all thanks to this young woman.
"I'm very humbled by all the support and all the people who have supported me and given me strength when I felt like I couldn't always raise that last thousand dollars, said Kylie DeWees.
It all began because of this; almost two years ago a gunman killed innocent people at sandy hook elementary.
That tragedy inspired Kylie DeWees to start playing the piano.
She never took lessons or classes. The tragedy just pulled the music out of her.
"I really wanted to raise the Angel of Hope statue for Newtown but when we called and talked to them they already had someone raising money for that so we decided to bring it to Xaiver, she said.
Kylie started writing songs, made CDs, and sold them.
"It took about a year. The first two events that we did sold out pretty fast, she raised a little over 19,000, said Kylies Mom Lisa DeWees.
"For a student to take to be able to take this kind of project and be successful with it is nothing short of a miracle, said Lisa Johnson, Angel of Hope Representative.
Johnson says Kylie is the youngest person, so far, to buy a statue in the city.
As for Kylie, she wants her message to continue to reach people.
"I really hope it's a place that people can come and feel love and support from this angel.
This angel of hope statue is the first in Cedar Rapids and one of only three in Iowa.
The other two are in Iowa City and Des Moines. There are 124 statues worldwide.
