Horizons Closing Senior Dining Sites

LINN COUNTY (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Horizons, A Family Service Alliance and the Heritage Area Agency on Aging announces the closure of senior congregate dining sites in Ely, Hiawatha, Marion, Springville and St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.

The changes will take effect at the end of April 30, and come in response to an overall reduction of $200,000 in Horizons' meal budget for the 2015 fiscal year, or the equivalent of 35,500 meals.

The sites at the Healthy Horizons Center, 1202 10th St. SE in Cedar Rapids, and Southeast Linn Community Center in Lisbon will continue to operate under Older Americans Act funding.

The home-delivered component of the program will also remain as it is, according to Horizons Meals On Wheels Director Dianna Young.

In explaining the cuts, Young said, "We've seen an increase in the number of low-income seniors that we're serving, and pride ourselves on being able to allow these people to contribute whatever they feel comfortable with giving us. We never want to refuse meal service based on an older adult's inability to pay. However, the amount of voluntary contributions we have received has decreased while our client base has grown, and the less funds we have available, the less meals we unfortunately are able to serve."
