Office Layout Could Hamper Productivity
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX 28) - If you're noticing yourself getting sick in the office, it could be thanks to the layout.
New research suggests that an open office plan could have an affect on your mental and physical well-being.
American companies standardized the square room divided by cubicles to foster a team atmosphere. But doctors say that kind of layout may lower your motivation, focus and maybe even your life expectancy.
Even an active office with quieter workspaces have a greater risk of airborne germs than closed-off individual workspaces.
"A lot of my patients tell me that sitting is the new smoking. if you don't move, you have more risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes," said Doctor Len Horovitzit. "It's absolutely true that a sneeze cloud, which is like a balloon can travel a lot father in an open space and can affect a lot more people," said Horovitzit.
The healthiest possibile office varies depending on the worker and the individual needs of that person. But offering employees a choice of where to sit, stand, or walk is suggested.
