Iowa Legislature Debates End of Session Bills

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa Legislature has begun debate on budget measures and a few remaining policy bills in an effort to finish the 2014 legislative session.
With several major budget bills remaining and three of Gov. Terry Branstad's priority measures hanging in the balance, debate began Wednesday afternoon with a goal of finishing the session later in the evening.
Budget bills still to be passed include one that funds state elected officials' offices including governor, auditor, treasurer, and secretary of state and a catch-all spending measure that usually attracts contentious amendments. This year gun issues, abortion language and a gas tax are among the 15 amendments tacked on.
