Tiffin Fights Growing Pains
TIFFIN, IA (CBS2/FOX28) While some Iowa cities are doing their best to keep its people within city limits, one small corridor city cant stop growing.
On the road into town, new condos surrounded by plenty of space for more is evidence that Tiffin has a good problem.
"Last year we approved 880 households total, said Tiffin City Administrator/Clerk Michon Jackson. They're not all going to be built this year, but that's how much growth we have coming."
Tiffin has just a little more than 2,000 people as it is, so that kind of increase can cause bad problems.
"So in an effort to prepare for that, said Jackson. We have to have the streets ready, water ready, sewer ready.
And a volunteer fire department thats ready.
"Well it would be nice to get a couple more trucks out of the station per call, said Volunteer Firefighter Nate Van Voorst. But I mean, right now we're getting by."
Just look at this afternoon. Two grass fires in nearby communities mean Tiffin jumps into the fire department shuffle.
"A nearby town has a grass fire and that department is actually helping another department so we're trying to help them, said Medical Officer Amy Shaull.
So while a fire station might not be the first place you would see a Help Wanted sign, Tiffins bravest are recruiting.
The city says it hopes to have enough people to begin training classes in May or June.
"If you live in city limits and work in city limits, it's really nice to have you here to be able to leave work and come help when an emergency situation occurs, said Shaull.
All to make sure that a growing Tiffin doesnt reach the end of its road.
