Magnitude 8.2 Quake Strikes Chile
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Officials in Chile are reporting damage from a magnitude-8.2 earthquake that struck tonight off the coast of northern Chile.
The powerful tremor set off a small tsunami and caused landslides. In the city of Arica, the mayor reports some homes made of adobe were destroyed and there were minor injuries.
The quake shook modern buildings in nearby Peru and in Bolivia's high altitude capital of La Paz, which is 290 miles away from the quake's center. Evacuations were ordered in both coastal Chile and Peru.
There have already been at least 10 strong aftershocks, including a 6.2 tremor. A seismologist at the University of Chile says more aftershocks and even a larger quake can't be ruled out.
Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. The strongest earthquake ever recorded happened in Chile -- a magnitude-9.5 tremor in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people.
