Senate Candidates Debate

JOHNSTON, IA (CBS2/FOX28)  In the race to the finish line for the Iowa Republican Primary, five candidates for U.S. Senate squared off Thursday night for their first televised debate.

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin retires at the end of this term and for the first time in 30 years voters will be choosing from two brand new candidates.  Representative Bruce Braley is the only Democrat running for the seat, but five Republicans all want the opportunity to run against him.

Matt Whitaker is a former Iowa Hawkeye football player and attorney, Joni Ernst is a Lt. Colonel in the Iowa National Guard and member of the Iowa State Senate, Scott Schaben is a navy veteran and sales manager at a car dealership, Mark Jacobs is the former CEO of Reliant Energy and Sam Clovis is a 25-year Air Force veteran and until recently a conservative radio talk show host.

The Republican primary is June 3rd, the winning candidate would need to carry 35% of the vote to avoid a party nominating convention.
