State of The County Address: Linn County

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--Linn County leaders gathered today for the eighth annual state of the county address.

The luncheon was a chance to look at the county's accomplishments and future initiatives.

It's her last state of the county luncheon as a supervisor.

"I'll be leaving the county in great shape. Got through the flood, got through rebuilding. I've done what I wanted to do, said Supervisor Lu Barron.

But as supervisor Lu Barron takes her final bow, she says there's still work to be done in Linn County.

"Mental health is our number one priority, we want to make sure that as the Options of Linn County and that program changes that we are still serving those clients that are there, she said.

Options of Linn county has been around for more than 40 years.

It's an organization that helps residents who have disabilities find employment.

"This is them earning a pay check giving back to society and feeling a certain level of self-worth, said Supervisor Ben Rogers.

But funding for the program is an issue.

While county leaders are still unsure of its future, they are trying to get creative.

Last November they formed a task force to look into available options for the program.

"It's critical. First of all it's a quality of life. These are individuals that want to work. Many of whom have the ability to work. They just need a little extra help, said Rogers.

Keeping it, in some form, is a goal county leaders hope they will eventually bring to fruition.
